Express Scripts - 2016 Drug Trend Report
Express Scripts recently published their annual Drug Trend report, which examined pharmacy trends and spend in 2016. It's a good resource for pharmacy data and contains some interesting insights and takeaways. Topping the list of pharmacy spend by therapy class, based on per employee per year (PEPY) spend, are:
1. Inflammatory Conditions
2. Diabetes
3. Oncology/Cancer
Per the report, one of every five dollars spent on prescription drugs was for a diabetes or specialty inflammatory conditions drug. Express Scripts pins the increase in U.S. drug spending in 2016 to 3.8%, a decrease of 27% when compared to 2015, with generic drug use cited as a large contributor to holding down costs. The report forecasts overall annual drug spending to increase 10%-13%, net of rebates, over the next three years.
